Space-A Trip #2: The Plan

Posted on Apr 11, 2013

The Space-A travel adventure continues! This is our current plan: depart McChord AFB on Friday, April 12th, at 8:40 AM headed towards Eglin, AFB in Florida. Now, Eglin is about 11 hours from where we live. There’s a flight on Saturday into Dover, DE, which is only 7 1/2 hours, but the thought of arriving into Florida is just so much more appealing than Delaware. Yes, I’m a wimp when it comes to being cold. We shall see as the plan unfolds!

It’s a great day to be ALIVE!!! 😀

Space-A Trip #1: Wow, What A Trip!

Posted on Apr 7, 2013

You know, sometimes I feel like the modern-day Dr. Seuss of bloggers. In my head I hear, “One trip, two trips . . .” and I want to write everything in sing-song fashion. But then the semi-adult in me takes over and auto-corrects. Wow, four hyphenated words in three sentences. Gotta stop that. Well, “sing-song” isn’t really supposed to have a hyphen, but I didn’t like the way it looked without one.

Anyway, I am on a most incredible journey! My husband and I are up in the air on a C-17 cargo plane bound for Washington State. There are only ten of us here in this cavernous space and who knows how many more in the cockpit area. My bet is on two.

I can’t help but compare this to my commercial airline experiences, and I find this whole adventure totally amazing. I’m in awe of the simplicity and informality of the boarding, loading, and seating process. No one seems overly concerned that my laptop carrier and snack bag are not stowed anywhere in particular (wasn’t exactly sure where they were supposed to go). So, they’re just sitting on the floor kind of in front of me, absolutely not lodged in an overhead bin or secured in any way, shape, form, or fashion.

Bryan told me to act like this wasn’t my first time or we might have to buy everyone beer. What??? Anywho .  . .  that whole comment confused me, so I just let it slide.

No way. The lady across the cavern just pulled down the three jump seats adjacent to her, laid out a sleeping bag, and covered up. I’m so gonna take a pic. It will be “Exhibit A.” Then the guy across from me covered his head up turban style with his jacket. I think he might be sleeping. Nope, as I was attempting to take his pic, he opened his eyes and looked at me. Busted! Had to quickly act like I was taking my own pic.

The craziness continues. Bryan, right here beside me, just unfurled his sleeping bag and is going to sleep on the FLOOR!!! Whoa!  WE ARE ON AN AIRPLANE! YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT!!! Wait. He wants to take a pic of me looking out of the window that’s way up high. Just a sec.  Whee. That was fun. I probably shouldn’t type everything that I’m thinking.

EVERY person in this group is knocked out. How can they sleep with all this excitement? Did you know there are no rules that we’re supposed to follow on this mighty aircraft? No instructions. No limits. Nada. One fish, two fish . . .   Oh man, now the guy in the green jumpsuit who works on this plane went over by the door to get a drink out of—you’re not going to believe this—two igloo coolers strapped onto the wall and stacked up on top of each other. I just have to go get a pic of this, too. I think we’re about up to Exhibit E now.

Then I’m really going to have to stop because we are seriously in danger of having to buy people adult-type juice if I don’t stop acting like a tourist-happy photographer. I need to stop smiling. Okay, this is lisa fragas reporting ALIVE from the jump seat of a C-17 about 25,000 feet in the air.

NOTE TO SELF: If we have the awesome privilege of flying one of these FREE flights home . . .hold up . . . did I tell you it was FREE??!! That is THE best thing about this whole experience! Aaagghhh! God is soooo good. Y’all just keep calm and hang tight. I’ll blog again soon. {Pics below}

This is our seating area!

The windows are just a little high . . .

Exhibit B (turban guy)

Exhibit E: Fancy, schmancy drink dispensers

This is my comfy(?) seat. It wasn’t any less comfortable than coach on commercial airlines. Actually, a bit more so because of all the room!!!

He sure can sleep well while traveling! Yep, right there on the floor. 😀

Still sleeping!

Star Wars remake???

What ya see is what ya get. 🙂

We made sure we were well-stocked and wouldn’t get hungry. :p
